The 1800’s were literally the “heyday” of Chautauqua County and the surrounding region. Hay, which was the only fuel of choice in the 1800’s, was grown on the farms surrounding the villages such as Westfield, Fredonia, and Ripley – all located along Route 20. The hay was transported to the city centers of the time, creating a vibrant economy which could support the construction of fine Victorian homes. Later fruit orchards and grape vineyards provided agricultural bounty which was also sent by train to buyers in Pittsburgh, Chicago, and New York City. Some of these historic homes have been turned into Inns and bed and breakfasts, so, when you are thinking about places to stay, think about the experiencing a little history at one of them.
A bed and breakfast (or B&B) is a small lodging establishment that offers overnight accommodation and breakfast, but does not offer other meals.
