Blueberry Sky is the only winery on the Trail which produces unusual wines which will fascinate the most serious of chefs and the most adventurous of eaters. These wines include garlic, onion, jalapeno, tomato, and cucumber. You must taste for yourself! One more that must be tried is Dandelion – which comes in both dry and sweet versions.
Don Heinert, a veterinarian with a focus on alternative medicine, along with his wife Rosalind, as well as Christina, Eric, Tony and Brett, actively participates in farm activities. Rosalind is behind most marketing efforts while Christina serves as wine manager. The boys help in all aspects of wine production as well as working on the farm. The Heinerts, who have a legacy of wine making on both sides of the family, actually took over the farm from a previous owner in 1991 and this is their first commercial agricultural venture.
The Heinerts started offering their wines, including blueberry, blackberry, elderberry, strawberry, plum, peach, rhubarb and dandelion in 1998. They utilize their own blueberries and elderberries but purchase other fruit from local farms. They also offer some vinegars and wine jelly. Their fresh berries are so popular that they are able to offer U-Pick and also
market their fresh berries to area upscale markets.
